What is an Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that alters the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is most commonly performed to reduce the prominence of ears that stick out too far from the head, a condition often referred to as protruding ears. However, it can also address asymmetry, misshapen cartilage, or earlobe concerns resulting from injury, aging, or previous piercings. The goal of otoplasty is to create a more proportional and natural-looking ear contour that enhances the overall harmony of the face.
The procedure typically involves making a small incision behind the ear to access and reshape the underlying cartilage. Depending on the specific concern, your surgeon may remove excess cartilage, fold and secure it with internal sutures, or adjust the ear’s angle in relation to the scalp. Because the incisions are discreetly placed behind the ear, any scarring is minimal and well-hidden. Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and comfort level. Most surgeries take one to two hours and have a relatively short recovery period.
