What is a MyoFascial Massage?
Myofascial massage, often referred to as myofascial release, is a therapeutic treatment that focuses on relieving tension within the fascia, a thin but strong network of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and organs throughout the body.
Fascia plays a crucial role in maintaining structural support and allowing muscles to move smoothly against one another. Under normal conditions, fascia remains flexible and elastic. However, factors such as injury, repetitive strain, poor posture, stress, or inflammation can cause fascia to tighten and develop restrictions.
Myofascial massage uses gentle, sustained pressure applied to specific areas of the body to stretch and release the fascia slowly. Rather than using quick strokes, the therapist holds pressure on restricted areas for extended periods, allowing the connective tissue to soften and lengthen gradually.
This technique helps restore normal movement within the fascial system and allows muscles to function more efficiently. Because fascia connects structures throughout the body, releasing tension in one area may improve comfort and mobility in other regions as well.
